Golden Block – The SHINY Chapters of Stackchain

Every so often over the last few years, if you hadn’t already muted the thread, you would have seen pretty often a post from the stackchain thread. There would be the most recent buy or stackjoin or meme, but at the top of the linked replies would be a consistent block, the same one you’d see on your feed for WEEKS at a time. As if it was some bookmark of the chain, a reference point. The stackers dubbed them “golden blocks”.

In the early days of the chain, the speed of everything created many of these golden blocks. They usually went by unnoticed. As the stackheight went up, the speed slowed down. With the slowing of blocks due to stackheight increase, these golden blocks were more often noticed.

In the never ending attempt to figure out if there was any rhyme or reason to why a block became a golden block many of us threw out theories.

We know they acted like bookmarks, or chapters for the thread, but why was block 1048 a golden block instead of 1049?

I don’t know if we ever got to the bottom of it. I believe we settled on the theory that twitter would truncate super long threads into chunks to make loading and caching the thread easier for twitter. Either way, like everything else with stackchain it became gamified, people began trying to calculate if it was a set number of blocks between each in hopes of predicting the next golden block.

It was awesome though when a stack with a good meme made the golden block. it would be the face of the stackchain until the next one was decided.

They became another fun tidbit of what was a wild time in stackchain.
